Winter season in fayoum
Winter is coming!
That’s it, winter season is here in the desert of Fayoum. If you have the chance to come visit us, you will be amazed by the magical colors of the desert in winter time. Sunrises, sunsets hit different, the colors are proper to the season, the ambiance and atmosphere around the fire at night, with traditional desert music, will get you on a trip to the 1001 Nights famous tale.
We felt it useful to write a small article for introducing the winter season here in Fayoum desert to our dear visitors.
The desert is mostly known around the world to be hot and dry. But in winter time, the desert can change a lot. From the heat of the summer, we change for a very cool weather during the day, and an actually quite low temperature during the night. The desert in winter shows us all his power again. Landscapes can change from one minute to another, more clouds are in the sky, creating new colors and atmospheres. The colors of the sun itself are also changing, at sunrise and sunset…Of course, it still very rarely rains, but some storms can happen, a mix of sand and rain, which always last only some minutes, and leave the desert with incredible vibes after. Visitors will not find one day alike here in winter! Moreover, it is still for the majority of people one of the best times of the year to visit the desert, and all Egypt also. This cool weather allows visitors to enjoy fully their days, as it is possible to go for activities any time in the day. In winter, we can even go for a ride at noon! Which is something completely impossible during the summer due to the high temperatures. Summer is another vibe… It is a sunrise and sunset rythme… Winter is an anytime rythme!
The night vibe is also different. In summertime, we live in the night, as it is too hot in the day. We stay for long hours having fun, taking some midnight baths in the swimming pool… Whereas in winter time, the sun goes down sooner, we finish our day activities sooner, eat dinner sooner, and then we hang out around the fire in the garden, with some hot tea with lemon, telling stories and tales, listening to bedouin music. The food is also different, with more hot soups to mix with traditional Egyptian rice, more potatoe-made food… Another vibe indeed! A very cosy one. After the tea around the fire, people mostly go to sleep earlier, to enjoy their next day with us to the fullest!
Horses are also having less problems during the winter. Indeed, their skin is less attacked by any kind of small besties (mosquitoes, flies,…), their food is of better quality, as the countryside is producing better quality and quantity food and, even if they are desert Arabian horses, they of course also prefer this cool weather compared to the 50 degrees in the day during summer… Time to run free in the desert with our beloved horses at any time!
Before finishing this small winter intro article, we would like to give you some small advices about packing for your next trip in Egypt during winter. Don’t forget to bring hot jackets, but also very light clothes for the day!
So, as we said, the weather in the desert of Fayoum (and most of Egypt) during winter is cool during the day, meaning between 20 and 25 degrees with a hot desert sun shining, and cold during the night, meaning between 8 and 12 degrees, but with a colder feeling sometimes due to the night desert wind.
This means that yes, even if you travel with a small cabin suitcase, you need to be able to pack a big jacket for the night, hoodies or pullovers with it, and you also need some light pants and t-shirts for the day! Some people even still take some baths during the winter with these temperatures. In winter, being in the sun is very good and relaxing. The sun is not burning in a bad way as it is during the summer, and it is warming you up all day long before the night.
We for sure won’t need to tell you the famous tip of by plane-travellers… Put all the heavy clothes on yourself during your travel, to have more space and weight available in your suitcase!
