As we are opening this new massage service in our guest house and writing to you about it, we for sure would like to give some small historical and cultural details about the traditions of massage in Egypt. Let’s even go back to real old historic facts, and talk about Ancient Egypt’s traditions.
In Ancient Egypt, massage was a very luxurious service, practiced for the Pharaohs and maybe the nobles. The Pharaoh Akhenaton is known for asking massage treatments with essential oils, a practice given by the priestesses of goddess Sekhmet, protector of the doctors. The massage was seen in a spiritual and healing way.
Many papyrus talking about the massage practices in Ancient Egypt can be found, and massage therapists of today’s world are of course learning from it still. What can be granted as original from Egypt may be the use of essential oils in the massage practices.
Of course, the massage is a tradition known in maybe almost all civilisations around the world. However, it is very present in Arab cultures and countries. Everybody knows and has heard of the hammam practices, and all of these very delicate and healthy body care practices of our culture!
The hammam practice was, is and will always be in our culture a purification and social tradition. People are sometimes happily organizing together a hammam activity between friends, and can spend complete afternoons or evenings in it! It is also not only about that. It is also about the beauty of the design of these places. The architecture, the atmosphere. It is definitely a whole experience.
